Standby Generators

A standby generator is a backup power source that automatically kicks in when your main utility power goes out, providing continuous power to your home. It's designed to be a reliable and automatic solution for outages, ensuring you can continue living comfortably and safely. 


How it works:

Sensing a Power Outage:
The generator monitors the utility power line and detects any disruption in the power supply.
Starting the Generator:

When an outage is detected, the generator automatically starts, utilizing either natural gas or liquid propane (LP). 

 Generating Electricity:

The generator's engine drives an alternator, which generates electricity to power your home. 

Transferring Power:

A transfer switch automatically switches your home's electrical system from the utility grid to the generator's power source. 

Running Until Power is Restored:

The generator continues to run until utility power is restored. 

Returning to Standby:

Once utility power is restored, the generator shuts off and returns to standby mode, ready for the next outage.

Portable Generators

Both transfer switches and interlock kits serve as safety mechanisms when using a portable generator, preventing back feeding of generator power into the utility lines. A transfer switch automatically transfers power from the grid to the generator, while an interlock kit physically prevents both breakers from being on simultaneously. Interlock kits are generally more economical and easier to install.


Transfer Switch: 

How it works:

A transfer switch is installed between your main electrical panel and the generator, allowing you to switch power sources when needed.


  • Safety: Prevents back feeding of generator power into the utility lines. 


Interlock Kit:

How it works:

An interlock kit is installed within your electrical panel and prevents the main breaker (for utility power) and the generator breaker from being turned on at the same time. This is typically achieved by a physical barrier or mechanical lock. 


  • Cost-effective: Interlock kits are generally less expensive than transfer switches. 
  • Simple installation: Can be installed relatively easily by an Electrician.
  • Flexible: You can choose which circuits to power by turning breakers on and off manually.


Annual Maintenance

Annual generator maintenance involves a comprehensive check and servicing of key components to ensure the generator's safety, reliability, and performance. This includes tasks like oil and filter changes, inspecting the electrical system. Regular maintenance is crucial for extending the generator's lifespan and ensuring it's ready to provide power when needed. 


Key Components and Maintenance Tasks:

Electrical System: Inspect wiring, alternator, and transfer switch for dirt, damage, or loose connections. 

Engine: Change oil, oil filter, fuel filter, and air filter. 

Fuel System: Check for leaks, inspect fuel lines, and remove water from the fuel tank (for diesel generators). 

Other Components: Inspect fan guards, air intake, crankcase breather, and spark plugs. 

Load Bank Testing: Perform load bank tests to ensure the generator can handle full load when needed.
